About Helix Building Consultancy

Helix Building Consultancy was founded by Jonathan, a RICS-qualified Building Surveyor with more than 20 years’ experience across the residential and commercial property sectors.
 
After graduating with a BSc(Hons) in Building Surveying in 2001, Jonathan began his career with Chesterton International and subsequently worked with leading property consultancies including Donaldsons, EC Harris and 3Sixty Real Estate. His experience ranges from diagnosing defects in residential buildings to managing complex and prestigious projects in the UK and Middle East.
 
Throughout his career, Jonathan has seen considerable variation in the quality of residential survey reports. Too often, reports are heavily templated, unnecessarily cautious and written to protect the surveyor rather than properly inform the client. Important defects may be buried in generic wording, while minor matters can be given disproportionate prominence. The result is a lengthy report that may technically satisfy a standard but does little to help a buyer understand the property or make an informed decision.
 
Helix was established to provide a better approach.
 
We believe a professional home survey should demonstrate judgement, technical competence and a clear understanding of the building being inspected. It should not simply list defects or assign condition ratings. It should explain what has been found, why it matters, the likely cause, the consequences of leaving it unresolved and the practical next steps.
 
Every Helix survey is personally undertaken and prepared by Jonathan. We do not operate a high-volume, “sausage factory” model, and we do not outsource inspections or report writing. Each property is considered individually, with advice tailored to its age, construction, condition and the client’s circumstances.
 
Our aim is not to produce the longest report or the greatest number of warnings. It is to provide clear, proportionate and technically informed advice that helps clients distinguish between routine maintenance, matters requiring further investigation and defects that may materially affect their purchase.
